Manufacturers face intense global competition that has changed the way these companies must compete. There is a greater recognition that the heart and soul of a manufacturing company is the product, not the factory. There must be great focus on product innovation and quality to remain competitive. For many manufacturers, this requires a revolution in their product development process -- a process that for many is not even well defined or documented.

Manufacturers can become design factories that translate customer needs into product innovatively and quickly. The design factory is a blueprint for a manufacturer's product development process optimized for its current business objectives. It is an investment in people, process and technology that delivers sustainable competitive advantage.

Manufacturers must use every asset in the world to deliver their products efficiently and at low cost. Are you making the right investments to be competitive? Are you a design factory?

At this June 1st event, we will introduce the line-up for our Fall 2004 Innovation Forum.

Joseph B. Costello, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

In 1997, Chief Executive magazine named him the top performing CEO of all publicly traded companies in North America and Upside magazine included him in its "Elite 100" list of top executives leading the digital revolution.

Joe Costello also currently serves as chairman of Barcelona Design, BravoBrava!, Catena Networks, NextNet Wireless, Soliloquy Learning and Zamba (NASDAQ: ZMBA), and is on the board of Santa Cruz Networks.

Seven Reasons why you need project management knowledge and skills
1. Today, most high tech workers are involved in one of more projects
in addition to their "regular job duties".

2. Increasing workloads cannot be managed if the amount of project
work is not understood, quantified, and planned.

3. All project team members must be able to initiate, plan, execute,
control, and closeout their part of the project, not just the project
manager.

4. The project manager generally does not have the time nor the
expertise to prepare accurate project plans.

5. Obtaining the PMP ® certification can further your career, and
possibly your .

6. Project Management skills can be used for personal projects, or for
projects in professional or non-profit organizations.

7. Project Management is a lot of common sense and a lot of FUN!

management skills. Karen Tate, PMP, MBA, is the founder and president of

Governor Bob Taft today recognized six Ohio women-owned companies for their outstanding achievements in the business community. The winners of the Governor's Award for Women's Excellence in Enterprise 2003 were honored this afternoon at a ceremony in Columbus. Lieutenant Governor Jennette Bradley was the event's keynote speaker.

Battelle Ventures Launches $150MM Seed and Early Stage VC Fund

Battelle putting up big bucks

Battelle Ventures, which manages or co-manages four national labs for the federal government (including the Oak Ridge National Laboratory), will launch a $150 million seed- and early-stage VC fund that will focus on commercializing technologies developed at these labs. Over a 12-year period, the fund hopes to invest in 20 to 25 companies. By providing a much-needed source of seed-stage funding, Battelle will "carry technologies through that ‘valley of death’ between the laboratory and the marketplace."

On the impact of the fund: "Venture capital funds have been way down, so just having a new fund in this economy is certainly a milestone in and of itself." Since 1999, the number of seed-stage deals
has collapsed by 74%.

New Opportunity for Technology-oriented Entrepreneurs

Aspiring entrepreneurs in the Greater Cincinnati Region now have an exciting resource available to them to enhance their business success. The University of Cincinnati, along with its partner organizations, (BIO/START, Emerging Concepts, Inc., Hamilton County Business Center, CincyTechUSA and Children's Hospital Medical Center) has just been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Innovation Program to launch the "Cincinnati Creates Companies" Program. We are seeking your assistance in identifying viable candidates for this program.

"Cincinnati Creates Companies" provides a comprehensive program that addresses key knowledge, skills and insights needed to be a successful entrepreneur. The program is highly experiential, and as each participant moves through the training modules, they will apply the information learned to their own business plan development. The educational program also connects participants with a pipeline of critical resources that are essential in taking entrepreneurs from the idea stage to successful company formation. This includes the opportunity to work with an individual coach. Participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible to submit their final business plans in a competition for funding in the range of $25,000-$50,000. This will provide funding to support the early implementation needs of their business plans. Successful program participants will also present their business plans to the Cincinnati SoundingBoard and other networks to gain valuable business advice as well as exposure to additional sources of funding.

Two types of individuals or groups are eligible: those who have an idea for starting a technology-based company or want to expand a small company via new product development; and those who are seeking the intellectual property needed to start a new company.

This is a very exciting opportunity for our region to gain a competitive economic edge by providing targeted support to aspiring entrepreneurs. The "Cincinnati Creates Companies" partnership brings a wide range of perspectives, ideas and expertise. It not only brings together a network of external resource groups but also includes a multidisciplinary team drawn from across the University. The University areas include the Office of Entrepreneurial Affairs, Intellectual Property Office, the Colleges of Business and Engineering and the UC Center for Entrepreneurship Education and Research. Together these organizations and their extensive networks, provide the breadth and depth of expertise to achieve the program goals.

We would be very happy to provide you and your organization with additional information about "Cincinnati Creates Companies." If you are interested in someone from the program presenting to your group, please contact Dr. Dorothy H. Air at Dorothy.air@uc.edu or at 558-6054.

Free Business Plan Review.

The Dayton i-Zone is proud to announce that Wright State University is offering to review your business plan during the fall quarter of 2003. A team of students along with faculty will review your business plan and give you valuable feedback that will help you improve the quality and execution capability of your plan.

"This is an excellent opportunity to receive assistance from the university in preparation for the next i-Zone $100,000 Business Plan Competition," states David Gasper, chair of the i-Zone Pillar program and judge for the i-Zone's 1st $100,000 Business Plan Competition.

Tim Hatton of Millennium Learning Technologies says, "The business plan review was one of the best programs in which I have been involved since founding Millennium Learning Technologies. The students demonstrated a grasp of the economics of business formation and actually taught me things about my business model that I had not yet learned. All in all, I would recommend this program to anyone who is in the early stages of developing a business plan."

Do not miss this opportunity to have your business plan reviewed and critiqued. Entrepreneurs who want to have their business plans reviewed, should send them to i-Zone Chair Philip Kessler, pkessler@porterwright.com, by Sept. 4, 2003.

Thomas Edison Program

The Ohio Department of Development established the Ohio Thomas Edison
Program in 1983 to encourage the growth of technology companies in
the state. The three components of the Program are the Edison
Technology Centers, the Edison Incubators, and the Edison Federal
Technology Commercialization Centers. The program focuses on:

-Procuct innovation and commercializtion
-Process innovation
-Business assistance (including incubation and acceleration)
-Linking Ohio research to in-state applied innovation

Ten incubators are located throughout the state in Akron, Cincinnati
(2 sites), Cleveland (2 sites), Columbus, Dayton, Mansfield, Toledo
and Youngstown. In the past year, the Edison Incubators helped start-
up companies attract more than $17 million in venture capital, $14
million in private investment, and 29 federal grants totaling $11
million. Edison Technology Centers assisted existing companies with
process improvements that have resulted in documented cost savings of
more than $376 million and increased new sales of nearly $750
million. For any related technology story ideas in your region,
please contact Julia Hinten in ODOD at (614) 466-2609.

Building on the history of technology initiatives like the Edison
Program is a key focus of Taft's Third Frontier Project. The Project,
a $1.6 billion, 10-year initiative, is the state's largest commitment
ever to expanding Ohio's high-tech research capabilities and
promoting start-up companies to create high-wage jobs for generations
to come.

when the city of Dayton got the green light to buy most of the 40
acres for $4.5 million during the next year.

The park would include office buildings, along with some retail, such
as coffee shops and bars, but no residential units. Tech Town
essentially will replace the tooling and machining business park that
used to be known as Tool Town.

Media-Presentation Tips Info from Media Training Worldwide August 5,
2003

NYC Media Training Seminar August 26th—see info below

Contents:

1. Presentation tips

2. TV Media Tips

3. Crisis Tips

Speaking/Presentation Tips

1. Good speakers occasionally use notes. Great speakers never use
notes. Horrible speakers usually use prepared full texts.

2. Messages that come out of your mouth need to be shorter, simpler,
and less complex than messages you put in press releases, columns,
brochures, manuals and books.

3. When preparing your messages, avoid the temptation of gathering more
and more information and facts. You likely know 100 times more
information already than your audience or a reporter does. Instead, focus on
narrowing and refining your message.

4. Don’t start a speech by saying, "Today I’m going to talk to you
about." Instead, start immediately with an interesting, provocative
statement or question.

TV/Media Tips

5. When appearing on TV, if you lean forward, your double chin will
disappear and you will appear to have a stronger jaw line.

6. If you move your hands when you are appearing on TV, you will seem
more confident, energetic and more interesting to watch.

7. The meaning of "off the record," "not for attribution," "on
background," and "on deep back ground," mean very different things to different
reporters and editors.

8. Find out EXACTLY what the terms mean to the reporters you are
dealing with BEFORE you say anything you would NOT want to read on the front
page.

Crisis Communications Tip

9. If a crisis happens to you, call the media BEFORE they call you.
(Psychologically, this will make the media think the problem isn’t very
big.)

10. Never try to think on your feet in a crisis situation. (Have your
message planned out in advance.)
